Community Circles Collaborative Mural – Free Workshop

May 25 at Astorino’s

1739 Venables Street, Vancouver, BC

Magpie’s Nest Community Art Space invites you to create a patchwork of ideas and creativity with your neighbours, young and old.

The completed collaborative mural will be a tapestry of painted and embellished circles – each circle being made up of four quarters.

Each quarter completed by an individual will connect to the work of three others, creating a visual representation of continuity within and encircling our neighbourhood.

The Community Circles Collaborative Mural will be kept and put on display by Britannia Community Centre.

All supplies will be provided by Magpie’s Nest. We will provide paints and printing inks, objects to print with, and ephemera to embellish with: beads, buttons, ribbon, embroidery floss, yarn, and needles.

Come and see what a community studio art could be like in the Hastings Sunrise Area – 2901 Hastings Street.

Friday Evening – Fabric Collage Mural

Community participants will be invited to participate in both group and individual projects on all three days. The community fabric collage mural will carry through the span of  the three days and will build in richness and complexity until the end of the pop-up studio event and will be a centrepiece on Sunday in our exhibition. We plan to carry this fabric mural to other pop-ups as well and eventually hang it in our envisioned permanent space.

On the first evening we will begin a large fabric collage mural 5’x15’ long. Participants will work collectively on all sides of large canvas background that will lay flat over a span of 3 long tables. Chairs will be provided around the mural. We will also have an art table for people to make individual fabric collages to take home, if they choose. Participants will be provided with a wide array of colorful fabrics, tissue paper, feathers, threads,  felt, safety pins, needles and thread and hot glue and white glue. There will be three art facilitators available at all times to demonstrate techniques and inspire participants to find their own creative ideas.

Kids’ Art Table

Children are welcome to participate in all activities with their parents but they are also invited to work independently on the “colouring mural” at the Kids Art Table. We will provide large sheet of paper for the mural and well as individual sheets of watercolour paper to make an original painting to take home. The mural will offer designs to paint and doodle on with watercolour paint, coloured pencils, oil pastels and crayons

Saturday – Community Upcycled Assemblage

On Saturday, participants are welcome to continue creating on the fabric collage mural. You will also be invited to contribute to creating a communal three dimensional (sculptural) assemblage made from recycled materials. You are also encouraged to bring something old that you would like to recycle into a new, individual work of art. For both individual upcycled sculptures and our community assemblage we will be providing intriguing metal and wood items and invite you to bring your own recycled items to create with.

Sunday – Art with Nature

On Sunday, community members will be invited to bring or gather inspiring objects from nature. As well, we will provide a vast array of beautiful leaves, grasses, branches, stones, shells ect. to make into meaningful and meditative works of nature art. Participants are also welcome to continue layering and altering the community fabric collage mural for the final exhibition at the end of the day on Sunday. All group projects will be displayed at the end of our weekend for community members to see and celebrate. We will have a reception with cookies and juice for participating members and we will celebrate our collective creativity together!
